“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, KJV)

Meaning of the Verse

This verse gives three assurances about God: He is a place of safety, a source of strength and a help who is close at hand.

“God is our refuge”

A refuge is a safe shelter. When life feels stormy, we can run to God and find protection and rest.

“And strength”

God is not only a hiding place. He also gives us the power to stand and keep going.

“A very present help in trouble”

“Very present” means help that is near, available and ready. You do not have to search far for God when trouble comes.

Context

Psalm 46 describes a world shaking, with mountains moving and nations in uproar. Yet the psalmist declares, “Therefore will not we fear” (verse 2). Confidence rests on who God is, not on how calm the circumstances are.

How to Apply It Today

• When stress rises, pause and pray, “Lord, You are my refuge.”
